This loop is described as one of the top snowshoe treks in the Columbia Highlands. Head north on the Kettle Crest National Scenic Trail across the southwestern flank of Columbia Mountain. The open summit, the high point for this adventure, holds views of the surrounding Kettle Range.

Columbia Mountain feels like the middle of nowhere even though it's easily accessible right off the paved highway. From the parking lot, take the Kettle Crest National Scenic Trail north, climbing through aspen groves and snow-covered meadows until reaching the side trail to Columbia.

Turn right and continue the climb, and at the summit loop trail, turn left (the loop is not recommended for winter visitors). After a little more than a quarter-mile, watch for the summit trail to the right and make one final big climb to Columbia's summit, home of a restored 1914 fire lookout cabin.

Enjoy the view of Sherman and Snow Peak to the south, Wapaloosie Mountain to the north, and on a clear day, the edge of the Cascades to the west. Return via the same route.

Some previous snowshoe experience and winter survival skills recommended on this trail.
