Ethan, Karen, Brenda, Jonah, & I headed over to Ancient Lakes on this cool, overcast day.  We started at the gate on the Quincey Lakes Rd, which is closed, and walked past the Judith Pool Trailhead to the Upper Ancient Lakes trailhead opposite Burke Lake.  From here we took the trail down the first cataract to the bench that runs along the north side of the Potholes Coulee Rib and  walked to the first overlook of Dusty Lake, then followed the trail that runs west along the bench to the overlook of the entire Dusty Lake arm of Potholes Coulee, where we had lunch.  It got breezy and cold, so we didn't spend our usual hour or so.  We then dropped into the Ancient Lakes arm of Potholes Coulee and made our way over to and around the North Lake to the base of the waterfall.  After a short break, we climbed the steep trail up the talus beside the waterfall, then past Judith Pool and back to the cars.  The lakes were often as smooth as glass which made for very nice reflections.  The only wildlife we saw were lots of geese overhead and some swans on Stan Coffin Lake.  We saw a few hikers and lots of horseback riders in the coulee while we were having lunch on the rib, but only a few hikers once we were in the coulee itself.
