Intermittent snow - not hard to cross

If you’re looking for a quick climb, some serenity, and don’t mind a rough trail, this is a very worthy hike. At about 1100 feet elevation gain over about a mile, this will get your heart pumping.

There were probably 40 cars at the Mailbox Peak trailhead when I drove by but no one on the Stegosauras climb. To get here, continue on the Middle Fork road almost till it ends. At about 11.8 miles is the large parking area for the Middle Fork trail. Park here, cross the impressive steel bridge, and go right onto the Pratt River Trail. After about .25 miles look for a trail going up to the left. Today it was muddy at the bottom but after a few hundred meters it was fine. I didn’t hit any snow until about 2000 feet, just before the summit. And it was just a light dusting. I continued on a boot path all the way to the furthest east point of the Butte, where the sun was warm. It took about 35-40 minutes to reach this spot.

The views of Garfield and Russian Butte are quite nice. The only sound is the rivers running on both sides of the Butte.

Stuke Sowle on Stegosaurus Butte

Was thinking of heading to the butte today to ring in the New Year and your TR is very informative. Thank you for taking the time to post and beautiful pictures!

How was it?

I hope you made it out today and am so glad that my trip report was helpful. Mostly because it gives me a chance to return the favor—your trip reports over the years have been very helpful for me, most recently your Artist Point report (I stayed overnight at Huntoon Point in early December) Thanks!
