After trying to do a couple other hikes, we ended up revisiting the Umtanum area. The road to the trailhead was quite scenic and would be worth driving through just for the views, it is paved so there are no issues. The route takes a fairly straightforward climb once beyond the railroad tracks and doesn't let up much until you are on the ridge. The trail gets steep near the top and that lead to a few hikers trying alternate means of descending- some choosing a dirt glissade route, others having to use their hands for extra stability. It would be much worse if a recent rain made the dirt turn into mud, but it was passable with some carefully chosen steps. The flowers are just starting to show their awesome beauty, and the valley should be in full bloom in the next week or two if I would venture a guess.
