Sunday we hiked Mt Dickerman with the family (including our son Jake, now 16 month old). It was a great success! During our winter trips Jake was still too young to realize what was happening, but now he is old enough to notice his environment, and he was very excited about the mountain views and snow. Imagine my excitement when he started pointing out all the peaks!! We started at 8:30am and returned to the car at about 4pm. We took it fairly easy, but we did take Jake out of the carrier only twice (halfway the climb and at the summit). He didn't seem to get bored at all, but it did take a lot of energy to keep him engaged (point out trees, flowers, butterflies etc). We regularly walk for 2-3 hours in the local park though, so he is very much used to sitting in the backpack. The trail is mostly in good shape, except for a couple of rocks in the waterfall crossing. There are 3 snow fields remaining, but these are not in steep areas. There were a lot of people on the trail, but the parking area didn't seem to be full during the day. All hikers seemed friendly and well-behaved: no poop bags 'to pick up later', dogs generally on leash, not loud, no music. I might almost reconsider my lack of enthusiasm for popular hikes!
